Exponent Calculator

Calculate powers and exponents

Raise a number to a power, or take roots, without doing the repeated multiplication yourself. Useful for squaring, cubing, compound growth math, or reversing a square with a root.

Result

1,024

2^10

Square Root

1.414214

Cube Root

1.259921

How to Use This Calculator

  1. Enter the base number.
  2. Enter the exponent (the power to raise it to).
  3. Check the main result, plus the square and cube roots of the base.

Why Use This Calculator?

  • Squaring a measurement for area calculations.
  • Working through compound-growth or physics formulas that need powers.
  • Finding a square or cube root quickly.

Real-World Examples

2 to the power of 10

2¹⁰ = 1,024 — the basis of many computer storage numbers.

Square root of 144

√144 = 12, which is handy for reversing a 12×12 area back to a side length.

What an exponent means

An exponent tells you how many times to multiply the base by itself. So 3⁴ means 3 × 3 × 3 × 3 = 81. A root goes the other way — the square root of 81 is 9, because 9 × 9 = 81.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can the exponent be a decimal or negative?

Yes. A negative exponent means "one over" that power, so 2⁻¹ = 0.5. Decimals work too, though the result may be irrational.

What's the difference between the power result and the roots shown?

The main result is base raised to your exponent. The square and cube roots are extras, calculated from the base, to save you a separate step.

Why is my answer shown in scientific notation?

Very large or very small results are easier to read that way — 1e6 just means 1 followed by six zeros.

Results are exact for standard inputs; very large powers may be shown in scientific notation.
